The Benefits of Water With a Soft Touch

Home water filtration systems can provide significant peace of mind for homeowners who are concerned about the possibility of contaminants that exist in municipal treatment. Whole house and point-of-service filters ensure the water you use for drinking, cooking, bathing, laundry, etc. is clean and healthy. The right, expertly installed water filtration system can reduce risk and give you a:

Healthy Home

  • Cleaner Dishes and Bright, Fresh Laundry
  • Save money on cleaning products

Softer Bodies

  • Silkier Hair
  • Healthier Hair and Skin

Tastier Food and Drinks

  • Better Water for Cooking

Smart Savings

  • No Need for Bottled Water, Eliminate the waste of plastic bottled water.
  • Improves Appliance Efficiency and Longevity
  • Water Heater Servicing, Repairs, and Replacement. Plumbers can fix water heaters by replacing faulty elements, thermocouples, or thermostats. For water heaters that are too old or beyond repair, complete replacement is the solution.
  • Pipe Replacement or Repair. For leaking or corroded pipes, plumbers might either patch the damaged section or replace the entire pipe. For small leaks, they might use pipe clamps or epoxy.
  • Installation of Water Pressure Regulators. To address low water pressure issues, plumbers might install pressure regulators to maintain a consistent water pressure level.
  • Sump Pump Servicing, Repair, Replacement. For failing sump pumps, plumbers might clean out any blockages, replace faulty components, or, if necessary, install a new unit.
  • Faucet and Fixture Repair or Replacement. Plumbers can often repair leaky faucets by replacing worn O-rings, washers, or valve seats, but sometimes may suggest replacing the fixture entirely if it’s too worn or outdated. This can range from replacing flappers and fill valves to unclogging with a plunger or toilet auger, or even replacing the entire toilet if needed.
  • Gas Plumbing Services. For gas leaks or the installation of gas appliances, plumbers with specific qualifications for gas plumbing will use pressure tests and gas detectors to ensure the safety and integrity of gas lines.

Parents who want to do everything they can to protect the health and well-being of their families would do well to consider water filtration. Studies show exposure to contaminated water and toxic chemicals – like lead, chlorine, PFAs, nitrates, and other cancer-causing, serious pollutants – can harm brain development and body function.

Water You Can Trust

Investing monthly in bottled water is expensive and, unfortunately, does not guarantee that you are drinking and cooking with clean, healthy water. Oversight and testing standards for bottled water are vague. Unsettling reports suggest that well-known brands like Dasani and Aquafina are nothing more than marked-up municipal water occasionally tainted by pollutants picked up at bottling plants. In the US, safety recalls have been issued for Real Water, Penafiel, and Sweet Springs Valley, among others.

Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that disease outbreaks linked to bottled water, notably those triggered by harmful parasites such as Cryptosporidium, often go unreported and present substantial health hazards.

From the CDC: “Contaminated bottled water can harm your health, including causing gastrointestinal illness, reproductive problems, and neurological disorders. Infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems may be more likely to get sick from some contaminants.”

Do You Have High Water Quality Standards? Let’s Find the Right Water Treatment for You.

You can’t control the quality of municipal or bottled water, but you can control the quality of the water that comes out of the tap. What’s the right water treatment solution for your home?

With so many options for water softening and filtration – such as whole house carbon filters and reverse osmosis systems – Boulanger’s prides itself on providing a personal recommendation based on your needs. Talk to us and we’ll test your water and explore options. Your water filtration needs are unique. Boulanger’s can customize these and other systems to address your concerns and fit your budget.

Whole House Filtration Systems. These systems treat all the water coming into your house, providing filtered water for every tap. There are various types of whole-house filtration systems, each targeting different contaminants. Some common types include:

  • Reverse Osmosis Systems (RO Systems). A type of point-of-use filtration system that uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove a wide range of contaminants, including dissolved minerals, heavy metals, and some microorganisms.
  • UV Water Purifiers. Use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and viruses in your water. They are not effective against other contaminants.
  • Activated Carbon Filters. Removes chlorine, odor and taste impurities.
  • Sediment Filters. These are often used as a pre-filter for other filtration systems. They remove dirt, sand, and rust particles from your water.
  • Ion Exchange Filters. Water softeners are a common type of ion exchange filter that removes hard water minerals. These filters remove specific contaminants by exchanging ions in the water with other ions.

Under-the-Sink Water Filter Systems. Popular choices for enhancing water quality directly at the point of use, under-the-sink water filtration systems are typically connected to the cold water line, providing filtered water from a separate faucet or the existing kitchen faucet. Each type of under-sink filter has its own strengths and is effective against different contaminants. In addition to RO and UV, here are some common types of point-of-use home water filtration systems:

  • Carbon Block Filters. A densely packed form of activated carbon that removes contaminants like chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, and certain heavy metals. Carbon block filters are effective at improving the taste and odor of water.
  • Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Filters. Similar to carbon block filters but with a looser form of carbon, GAC filters are good for reducing chlorine, chemicals that cause bad taste and odor, and organic compounds.
  • Inline Water Filters. These are simple filtration units installed directly on the water line leading to the sink. They can include various types of filtration media, like activated carbon or polypropylene for sediment removal. Compact and cost-effective, inline filters can improve water taste and remove basic contaminants.

Ceramic Filters. These can remove bacteria, protozoa, and some sediment from water. They have a microporous structure that physically blocks contaminants from passing through.

The Toxic 15

Water can harbor a range of concerning chemicals and pollutants, some of which are quite worrisome due to their potential health effects. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it sheds light on key contaminants that often raise alarms. Remember: Health risks can depend on individual sensitivities, the environment, and the level of exposure.

  1. Lead. A toxic metal that can be harmful even at low exposure levels and is known to cause neurological problems, especially in children.
  2. Mercury. Another heavy metal that poses significant health risks, including neurological and developmental damage.
  3. Arsenic. A carcinogenic chemical that can also cause skin changes and has been linked to increased risks of several types of cancers.
  4. Chromium-6 (Hexavalent Chromium). Infamously featured in the film “Erin Brockovich,” chromium-6 is known to cause cancer and other health issues when ingested at certain levels.
  5. Cadmium. This heavy metal can accumulate in the kidneys and can cause kidney damage as well as bone demineralization.
  6. Nitrates/Nitrites. Commonly derived from fertilizers and can be particularly dangerous to infants and young children, causing “blue baby syndrome,” which interferes with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen.
  7. Benzene. A volatile organic compound (VOC) that is carcinogenic and can have acute effects at higher exposures.
  8. Trichloroethylene. TCE is a volatile, colorless liquid organic chemical that does not occur naturally and is created by chemical synthesis. Chronic or prolonged exposure to TCE has been associated with effects on the liver, kidneys, immune system, and central nervous system.
  9. Pesticides and Herbicides. Chemicals used in agriculture can contaminate water supplies and are linked to a variety of health problems, including hormonal and reproductive issues.
  10. PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances). As previously mentioned, this group of chemicals is persistent in the environment and in human bodies, linked to numerous health issues.
  11. Pharmaceuticals. Residues of various medicines can enter water systems and may affect human health and aquatic life.
  12. Microplastics. Tiny plastic particles can carry a range of pollutants and are just beginning to be understood in terms of their environmental and health impacts.
  13. Polychlorinated Biphenyls. PCBs are industrial chemicals that are highly toxic and have been banned in many countries but persist in the environment.
  14. Dioxins. Highly toxic compounds that are byproducts of some manufacturing processes and can cause reproductive and developmental problems, damage the immune system, interfere with hormones, and also cause cancer.
  15. Radon. A naturally occurring radioactive gas that, when present in water, can be inhaled or ingested, increasing the risk of lung and stomach cancer.
